Abstract

This study investigates the sorption of heavy non-ferrous metal ions from aqueous solutions using Amberlite IR-120 ion-exchange resin, with particular emphasis on copper (Cu2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions. The sorption process was examined under static conditions at an ionite-to-solution ratio of 1:100, within a pH range of 5.5–7.5 and a temperature range of 25–55°C. Residual metal ion concentrations were determined using complexometric titration and atomic absorption spectrometry. The results demonstrated that Amberlite IR-120 exhibits high sorption efficiency, with maximum removal rates of 90% for copper ions and 92% for lead ions. The highest sorption efficiency was observed at pH 6.5–7.0. The experimental sorption isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The high correlation coefficients obtained for the Langmuir model (R2=0.97–0.98R^2 = 0.97–0.98) indicate good agreement between the experimental data and the model. Kinetic studies revealed that sorption equilibrium was established within approximately 2.5–3 hours and that intraparticle diffusion was the main rate-limiting mechanism. Increasing the temperature from 25°C to 55°C enhanced the sorption rate by approximately 1.5–2.5 times. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the sorption process was exothermic. However, the separation of copper and lead ions from mixed solutions remained limited by the relatively low separation factor. Overall, Amberlite IR-120 is a promising ion-exchange material for removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions, particularly for lead removal, and may have potential applications in wastewater treatment and environmental protection.
