FUNCTIONAL-SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF INFLECTIONAL SUFFIXES OF VERBS IN THE AZERBAIJANI LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article investigates the functional-semantic characteristics of verb-forming inflectional suffixes in the Azerbaijani language. The study analyzes the morphological status and syntactic functions of non-finite verb forms, namely the infinitive, participle, and gerund. It is demonstrated that these suffixes do not create new lexical units but modify the grammatical form of the verb and expand its syntactic potential. The infinitive nominalizes the action and functions as a noun; the participle presents the action as an attribute; and the gerund establishes temporal, causal, and sequential relations between actions. The research concludes that verb-forming inflectional suffixes occupy a significant place in the morphological system of the Azerbaijani language and serve as one of the main mechanisms ensuring the semantic flexibility of the verb.
